This mission goal in itself becomes a ludicrous, farcical inclusion pretty early on, as almost every mission involves one of the three characters going to Mt. The majority of the game’s missions involve you leaving your Antiques Shop (the aforementioned safe location) and going to Mount Hikami, usually to end up finding and rescuing someone. Mount Hikami is an allegedly cursed mountain, the subject of numerous bits of creepy folklore, terrifying urban legend and tragic deaths and disappearances. The biggest problem I have is its central location. It’s a shame, then, that the rest of the game falters in exactly the areas these rare moments of strength have been built up. Brightly lit homely locations, a sense of eerie foreboding, incredibly strong lore-building. It’s something I desperately wanted to see here, and thankfully Koei Tecmo delivered. Drawing influence from my personal favourite entry in the series, Project Zero 3, these bits play on the classic horror trope of taking a familiar, safe location and making it distinctly unsafe. There are moments in Maiden of Black Water that are up there with the best of the series. The interactive horror genre is perhaps stronger than ever, and a new Project Zero pretty much couldn’t fail, right? Well.ĭon’t get me wrong. As the first English language brand-new entry into the main series since the fantastic Project Zero 3: The Tormented, Maiden of Black Water has a lot to live up to.
A mostly-digital-only release (it has a ludicrously expensive physical special edition, but other than that it’s eShop only). So now we have Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water. That received a mixed reception, although I recently played it on a New3DS and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Alongside that we had Spirit Camera: The Cursed Memoir, which uses the 3DS as an augmented reality Camera Obscura, allowing you to view ghosts as if they’re in the room with you. This had some bizarre design decisions, involving ‘sexing up’ the two mid-teenage girl protagonists, making for a rather strange experience. Then we had a Wii remake of the second Project Zero game, Crimson Butterfly. We had Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (Wii), which never officially got a release outside of Japan. The last few releases have been a strangely mixed bag. After flitting about from console to console for a while, the Project Zero series (Fatal Frame in the US) seems to have found a permanent home with Nintendo.
